Welcome Valued Volunteers
New volunteers will always be accompanied by a veteran volunteer on their first pick up and delivery.
Volunteers should arrive at Roche Brothers with an empty car! Since Roche has expanded their Home Delivery you may find it easier to access the loading dock and/or ramp if you show up between 10:00-10:30 am. Expect many crates and banana boxes, the equivalent of about 8 large trash bags of food.
Drive around the back to the 2nd loading dock (there are stairs leading up to it and a rolling ramp for boxes). If the loading dock door is closed first try knocking/banging on the door and it will be opened. If not, call the store (978-263-0404) and tell them you need the back loading door opened. Go in and ask for either Henry, Edgar or Joe and tell them that you are picking up for the food pantry. They will show you where the cart is with the donated produce (if ready) and the walk in where prepared foods and dairy are stored. Prepared foods have to be boxed (we will show you where to find boxes). If you have any concern about which are the prepared foods for the pantry ask before boxing. Before taking dairy make sure the Expiration Date is at least that day or later.
Take EVERYTHING offered EXCEPT breads and other baked items (these go to other pantries each day). Breads & Baked goods can be taken on the 3rd Wednesday of every month (the other pantry is closed on that day).
Find your day below and follow the directions to the appropriate pantry. All pickups should be made between 10:00-10:30 AM and then delivered directly to the pantry listed for that day.
Mondays and Saturdays: Transitions At Devens [18 Cavite Street, Devens] Park in front. Ring the buzzer for the office and someone will let you in. Nancine is the manager.
Tuesdays and Thursdays: WHEAT (272 High Street Extension, Clinton, MA 978-365-6349); The pantry is in a small strip mall perpendicular to High Street. Heading south on 110 from Harvard, go through the underpass and straight through the traffic light where 110 turns right. The entrance is the second driveway on your right. Look for a blue sign for Sims Cleaners. The pantry is at the far end of the strip, next to the Brazilian butcher.
Wednesdays and Fridays: Loaves and Fishes, 234 Barnum Road, Devens, MA Go down the driveway and back in to the loading dock. Peter is usually there along with 2-3 other volunteers to help you. They will ask you to sign a form indicating how long it took you to do the pick up and deliver.
We love new volunteers! Please spread the word amongst your friends. No better recruiters than those that are already volunteers.
And we love showing new volunteers the ropes. If this is your first time please contact one of the Glean Team chairs to arrange to shadow one of us before gleaning on your own.
