First Light Dinners
First Light Dinners
"For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat..." Matthew 25:35 Would you like a relatively easy way to put your faith into action and share the love of Christ with neighbors who are temporarily unhoused? Would you like to include your school-age children, too? Join together with other members of IPC to be the Body of Christ moving beyond the church into our community!
The First Light Shelter for Homeless Women and Children continues to follow COVID guidelines, but they are now able to invite us to bring AND serve supper at 6:30 pm. All participants must wear masks (please bring your own), food-handling gloves (provided by First Light), and remain on the kitchen side of the serving line. Please plan to arrive by 5:30 pm if you plan to prepare supper in the First Light Kitchen. The women look forward to supper being served by 6:30 pm. We are excited to be able to remain and serve supper!
IPC will be providing the evening meals each night the week of November 28-December 4. As of November 17, we need to prepare enough to feed 41 women, no more than that, please. You can either prepare the meal at your home, then deliver and serve at First Light; or order a meal from a restaurant to pick up and deliver and serve (or arrange for delivery for IPC volunteers to serve); or you can safely prepare a meal in the shelter kitchen and stay as a group to serve. If you or your group cannot stay to serve, please deliver the meal hot and ready to serve by 6:30 PM, and please recruit IPC volunteer servers in advance. If you need help recruiting volunteers, please let us know. If needed in a pinch, the First Light phone number is 205-323-4277.
Each date below has four volunteer slots. Our hope is that four families (or Sunday school or other small groups) will come together each night to prepare the meal, with each family responsible for one part of the meal: entree, two vegetables, bread and dessert. So, grab your church or neighborhood friends and claim a night to serve together! Thank you to IPC Youth Group for being the first to claim a night! It is truly a fun and meaningful form of service alongside some of our most vulnerable neighbors.
If you have not served before, we can help by providing you with easy and cost-effective menus for the meal from experienced volunteers! We can also walk you through the process with an experienced dinner volunteer so you can learn the ropes!
If you have questions, please contact Elise Warren at [email protected] Once you sign up, we will reach out to see what support you may need.
Please review the available slots below and click on the button to sign up. Thank you!
