Cooking for Those in Need

THANK YOU for cooking with heart and helping feed those in need in our DC shelters.

  • Friendship Place's La Casa Permanent Supportive Housing Program (long term housing and supportive services to chronically homeless men as they strive towards stability)
  • Joseph’s House (residential community and comprehensive nursing and support services to homeless men and women with advanced HIV disease and terminal cancer)
  • Calvary Women's Program (ensure women have access to housing, proper trauma-informed healthcare and educational support they need to take positive steps toward independence). NEW!: Calvary offers the choice to drop off or service residents in-person- PLEASE STATE IN "COMMENTS" SECTION WHICH YOU PLAN TO DO (see below for more details).

Please note that information varies for each shelter so make sure you follow the specific instructions and drop off details of any slot you sign up for.

INFORMATION TO KNOW:

Suggested meals options are listed below- but feel free to get creative!  PLEASE ENTER THE MEAL YOU PLAN TO MAKE IN THE "COMMENTS" SECTION.

For Joseph’s House slots:

Meals should be easy-to-serve, and include an entree, vegetable and sweet. Food should be placed in aluminum pans, covered by tin foil, with any directions written on top and should be cooked and room temp/cold. Please make sure to cook meat thoroughly. The shelters can re-heat the food. Please prepare generously for 10 people. Please do not cook pasta as a main course dish or make any pork dishes.

Food should be dropped off at Joseph’s House by 5:30 pm on your slotted day at 1730 Lanier Place, NW (if there is no street parking, pull into the alley behind Joseph’s House). Place meal on porch and knock or call 202-265-7174 for staff to retrieve the food.

For Friendship Place's LaCasa slots:

Meals need to be individually packaged for distribution---brown bags or individual containers. Please prepare generously for 40+ people.

Food should be dropped off at La Casa by 12 pm on your slotted day, at 1444 Irving St NW. Upon arrival, call 202-986-0237 and explain you would like curbside help for the food.

Suggested Joseph’s House (please do not cook pasta as a main course dish or make any pork dishes) DINNERS:

  • Entrees: shepherd’s pie, chili, roasted chicken and rice, stews, soft taco wraps, pot pie, meat enchiladas, casseroles of any kind (vegetarian dishes are fine!)

  • Sides: salads of any kind, broccoli, coleslaw, string beans, corn and peas, roasted squash…any veggie!

  • Sweets: brownies, cookies, bars, cut fruit

Suggested La Casa individual BAGGED (or container) LUNCHES:

  • Any sandwich: turkey, Italian Sub, chicken, PB&J sandwiches (3rd piece of bread for a double decker ideal!)

  • Chicken nuggets (in Ziplocs), fried chicken, quiche, etc

  • "Sides": hard-boiled egg, pretzels, fruit, healthful chips, granola bar, cut veggies, cheese stick, yogurt

  • If you have individual plastic containers or can get donated from a local supermarket/store- lunch ideas can expand to anything (like fried chicken, chili, pasta, etc.)
