Weir Programs

Fall DNR Weir Fieldtrips

Welcome to the DNR's fall Weir fieldtrip opportunities.

Weirs and hatcheries play an important role in helping to keep Michigan’s lakes, rivers and streams, one of the greatest freshwater fisheries in the world. Schools are invited to visit the weir during the annual fish, or egg, take operations to see firsthand how the DNR actively manages these world class waters. Students will experience the sights, sounds and smells of the amazing process in which thousands of fish swim up river into the weir.

School programs will include history, ecology, biology and natural resource stewardship.

The tour of the weirs includes (but is not limited to):

  • The story of salmon in the Great Lakes with an emphasis on fisheries management and invasive species
  • Up-close look at all aspects of the weir process including a rotation through various stations:
    • Fish sorting
    • Weir/river
    • Fish ladder
    • Egg take (Platte Weir & Little Manistee Weir)
    • Fish take (Boardman Weir)
  • History of the weir
  • What is a fish weir?
  • Why and how the DNR raises fish?
  • What are fish hatcheries and why are they important?
  • Salmon life cycle
  • Tour of the hatchery (Platte)
