We will be meeting close to or at the survey location for 8:45 AM or 9:30 AM, depending on the site. Directions to meeting spots will be sent out one to two days ahead of time. Once everyone has arrived a demonstration will be done on freshwater mussel identification and survey techniques. We will break for lunch at ~12:00 PM and hope to be finished with the survey by 3:00 or 3:30 PM. If there is inclement weather we will have to cancel and make up the survey at a later date. It is helpful if volunteers are able to stay for the entirety of the survey. All volunteers must be able to arrive at the meeting location for the start time because some sites require hiking to locate.
What to Bring
Volunteers have the option of snorkeling and/or wading during the survey. Some river sections are shallow and surveying with a clear bottomed bucket will be necessary. Most sections will be deeper and it is encouraged for volunteers to snorkel if they are comfortable. If planning to snorkel please bring a wetsuit or contact me with your size and if you need a mask/snorkel. Snorkeling is recommended only for those that are strong swimmers and comfortable in the water.
· Water shoes or old sneakers
· Waders (if you are not planning on snorkeling)
· If snorkeling: Mask, Snorkel, Wetsuit
· Sunblock & Insect Repellant
