100 Book Challenge Volunteering

The School District of Philadelphia's Anchor Goal #2 states, "In the first year of full implementation of our early literacy plan, the percentage of 3rd graders reading on grade level increased by five points, surpassing statewide gains."

To create a school culture that celebrates and nurtures a love of reading, all K-2 students at at McCall record time spent with “eyes on print” on a reading log. The reading log comes from the American Reading Company’s “100 Book Challenge,” & for every 15 minutes spent reading a reader can log a step.

On Wednesday, McCall HSA invites families to help us sort and label books for the 100 Book Challenge. Because this activity requires volunteers to be able to read the titles and label the English-language books according to their levels, English proficiency is required.

Interested volunteers must have all their clearances. If you are interested in volunteering, please send an email to [email protected] so the HSA can check with the school to confirm your volunteer status.

Thank you!

As background, starting in the 2017-2018 school year, all adults wishing to volunteer in the School District of Philadelphia will need to complete a Volunteer Orientation, as well as obtain various clearances. All the information can be found HERE:

Individuals will turn in their COMPLETED volunteer packets to the school secretary, so Ms. McKenna can review and sign off on the packet. Only AFTER the principal has signed off on the packet will the individual be allowed to volunteer. Volunteers will be required to submit updated clearances every 5 years.

Thank you!
