Dewees Island

Dewees Island Turtle Team 2022

Thanks for volunteering to walk for the Dewees Island Turtle Team!   We have two videos that will be helpful for you to watch before you walk.  Turtle Team Training 1 and Turtle Team Training 2. For more information about Loggerhead turtles, this is great video. We ask that you start your walk by 6:00am if you are walking South and 5:45am if you are walking North. Yes, this is early, but if we need to move the turtle nest, the eggs must be moved as close to laying time as possible. Also, you get to see a beautiful sunrise!

If for some reason you can't walk on your assigned day, please call Carey at 703-282-3111.

Call/text Judy immediately if see tracks at 843-259-1713.  If you haven't finished walking, you can continue to walk once a member of the turtle team has been notified and confirmed they are on their way. Who knows, there may be more tracks down the beach!

Even if your walk is uneventful, we still ask you to call Judy at 843-259-1713 when you're done so everyone can get on with their day.

Please remember:

  1. Walk the high tide line from the previous night.
  2. Text Judy as soon as you find a crawl.
  3. Please be mindful of resting birds near the shorebird nesting areas and do not disturb.
  4. Don’t walk into bird nesting areas following a crawl.
  5. If the tide is high and you can’t walk the most recent high tide line without flushing/disturbing the resting shorebirds please turn around and let us know.
  6. Dogs should be leashed or under effective voice control during patrol near nesting areas.
  7. Please stay as far away as possible from established sea turtle nests; predators will follow your scent to the nest.
  8. Glance at established nests for evidence of predation, erosion, or hatching.  Our first nests will typically hatch in late June.
  9. Help us collect trash and report on the Clean Swell app. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnHU6TsbHQE.  Please let Lori know if you need a re-usable trash collection [email protected].

South Walkers – Your territory is from Osprey Walk and south to the creek after the second to last dock.  Text Judy to report clear before you turn around to walk back.  Please note; if you walk 3 hours on either side of high tide you may not make it south past the shorebird resting/nesting area without distubing birds, that is ok to turn around at this point.  Text Judy to report clear before you turn around to walk back as well as a pin if you did not make it to the south end docks.

North Walkers – Now that the breach is closed, you can start at either end. Your territory is Osprey Walk to Lavender point inlet.  Please note; if you walk 3 hours on either side of high tide you may not make it past the shorebird resting/nesting area without distubing birds, it is ok to turn around at this point. Text Judy to report clear before you turn around to walk back as well as a pin if you did not make it the entire way.
