How to Set Security Settings on a Sign Up

Choose exactly how open or restricted your sign up should be, from the simple default to full enhanced security.

Every sign up starts with a simple default: participants enter their name and email, no account required, and they can still receive reminders or edit their own items. Easy for everyone involved.

Easy doesn't mean wide open, though. Sign ups aren't searchable by keyword, school name, or organization. The only way to find one is to search the exact email address of the creator, which makes it genuinely hard for a random person to stumble onto your sign up.

If you want more control than that, a few enhanced security options are available whenever you need them.

Enhanced Security Options

  • From your Created sign ups, click the ellipsis icon (•••) next to the sign up and select Edit.
  • On the Settings tab, click the Restrictions tab under Preferences.
  • Click the + symbol next to Enhanced Security.

From there, you'll see three options:

Require Accounts. Participants must create a SignUpGenius account (email and password) to sign up. This makes it easier for them to manage or repeat sign ups later, but it's optional. If you don't check this box, users can still create an account if they want to, they just won't be required to.

Require an Access Code. Your sign up is only visible to people who enter a specific code. This adds real security, but also a small amount of friction for participants. If you send invitations through SignUpGenius, the code goes out automatically. If you invite people through your own email, you'll need to share the code yourself.

Reject Sign Ups Outside Group. Limits sign ups to only the email addresses listed in your group. This works best for a small, defined group. Keep in mind participants have to sign up with the exact email address on your list, a different email from the same person will be rejected, and group email aliases won't work here since there's no way to know which individual addresses belong to the alias.

Want More Privacy Too?

Enhanced Security controls who can access your sign up. If you also want to keep participant names private from each other, pair this with Hide Names.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can anyone find my sign up by searching online?
No. Sign ups aren't searchable by keyword, school name, or organization. The only way to locate one is by entering the exact email address of the creator.

Do I need to turn on enhanced security for a normal sign up?
No. The default setting works fine for most sign ups. Enhanced security is there if you need more control over who can access or complete your sign up.

What's the difference between requiring an account and requiring an access code?
Requiring an account controls who can complete the sign up by making them log in first. An access code controls who can even view the sign up page at all. They solve different problems and can be used together.

Why was someone rejected when they tried to sign up with an email I have listed in my group?
Reject Sign Ups Outside Group only accepts the exact email address on your list. If someone uses a different email, even if it's their own, they'll be rejected. This setting also doesn't work with group email aliases.
