Opening Up Dialogue

A strong church community is built one honest conversation at a time. Whether you're kicking off a small group, welcoming new members, or breaking the ice before a Sunday class, the right question can spark real connection faster than almost anything else.

We've organized 25 questions into three tiers so you can meet people wherever they are — from lighthearted openers to questions that invite genuine faith conversation. Use them at small groups, women's ministry nights, men's breakfasts, new member mixers, youth events, or anywhere your church gathers.

How to Use These Questions

Start light and go deeper as trust builds. Let people pass without pressure, resist turning answers into advice sessions, and celebrate honesty when it shows up. The questions that feel a little risky to answer are often the ones that bring people closest together.

On the Surface

Start here. These are fun, low-stakes, and work in almost any church setting.

  • What did you want to be when you grew up — and how did that turn out?
  • What's a quirky or unusual fear you have?
  • If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
  • What movie or book does everyone love that you just don't get?
  • It's Friday night after a brutal week. How do you spend it?
  • What's a home project or hobby you tried that went hilariously wrong?
  • What was your first vehicle, and what was its nickname (or what should it have been)?
  • What is one favorite childhood activity you wish you could still do today?
  • If someone made a documentary about your life, what would the best scene be?
  • What's the most unusual thing you've ever ordered online or tracked down in a store?

A Little Deeper

Use these once people have loosened up. They work well for ministry teams, Bible studies, and anyone ready to go a little further than small talk.

  • Who has been a spiritual hero in your life, and what made them that?
  • What unique role did you play in your family growing up — oldest, baby, peacemaker, funny one, black sheep?
  • What is the most important thing a grandparent or older mentor ever taught you?
  • What book or story has had the biggest impact on your life besides the Bible?
  • What worship song or lyric has really spoken to your heart?
  • What is one spiritual tradition you have — or have always wanted to have — in your life or home?
  • Everyone has a "heart home," a place that just feels like you. What is yours?
  • Take a minute to brag: what's one accomplishment people might not know about that you're genuinely proud of?

Going Deep

Save these for groups that have built real trust. They invite vulnerability and the kind of conversation that sticks with people long after they leave the room.

  • What is a hard-earned lesson from your life you wish someone had told you earlier?
  • What prayer have you been praying the longest — or what prayer has God recently answered?
  • What is the most spiritually formative experience you've ever had — a verse, a person, a moment in nature, a piece of art?
  • If you could ask Jesus to change one problem in the world right now, what would it be?
  • Finish this sentence: "In order for a group to feel truly safe, I need..."
  • When was a time someone showed you unexpected compassion that pointed you straight to God?
  • As you grow older, what is one quality you hope to hold onto no matter what?
