No, tap to pay works on its own. A card reader is useful if you also want to accept swiped or inserted cards, or if you're taking a lot of payments and want a dedicated device instead of using your phone screen directly.
Yes. Card details are encrypted during the transaction and are never stored on your phone. Payment information stays protected the same way it does anywhere you use a card online or in person.
