Throughout the winter, Covenant welcomes our neighbors experiencing homelessness by hosting Room in the Inn. When we open our doors and our hearts, we prepare to receive Jesus, who Mother Teresa reminded us most often appears "in the distressing disguise of the poor." Volunteers provide a dignified place for neighbors to rest, while also opening themselves to the kind of transformation that takes place around tables.
On the first Tuesdays between December and March, Room in the Inn will depend on individual volunteers to prepare, serve, and share a meal and hospitality with our guests. The rest of the month, groups (i.e. friends, Sunday school classes, etc.) may claim nights to coordinate together. RITI provides a great opportunity for people of all ages and stages to serve, and children as young as elementary school are welcome.
Here's how it works: below, indicate how you would like to serve as an individual. You can sign up for one month, several or all.
We will host up to 14 guests so will prepare food for about 25 to 30 to allow for seconds and volunteers to dine as well. Guests will arrive at 6 pm and head downstairs to settle in. Dinner will be served at about 6:20pm. Clean up will begin around 7pm. You are welcome to stay for a while to socialize and provide fellowship for guests after dinner if you are able to do so.
If you are preparing food, indicate which category for which you'll provide something (store-bought or homemade; it's all good!).
- Beverages and shelf stable items may be dropped off in the donation bin (labeled “Room in the Inn") at the Covenant Fellowship Hall in the designated bin in the elevator alcove located near the kitchen (on the parking lot side of the building).
- Refrigerated items can be stored in the Fellowship Hall kitchen in the refrigerator marked Room in the Inn. (If you need access to the Fellowship Hall or kitchen, please call 704-333-9071).
- If your item needs to be served hot, please deliver it WARM to the kitchen no later than 5:30pm on Tuesday. It does not have to be hot enough to serve but cannot be cold as it will take too long to warm up.
Those who will serve and share the meal should arrive at the Fellowship Hall by 5:30pm.
