First Stage Young Company

Young Company 2020-2021 Auditions

WHAT IS IT? For high school actors who want to take their work to the next level, First Stage offers the Young Company, the nationally renowned training program for high school age actors. Meeting throughout the year, the Young Company is the college-level actor training program at First Stage Theater Academy. Accepted students will complete course work in Advanced Acting, Voice, Movement, Viewpoints, Shakespeare and electives ranging from Auditioning to Stage Combat to Dialects. In addition the Young Company hosts master classes with guest artists from across the nation, travels annually to compete at the Utah Shakespeare Festival High School Acting Competition, and hosts an overnight training program at American Players Theatre in Spring Green. The Young Company also produces two to three performance projects each season.

WHO IS IT FOR? For actors entering 9-11 grade who wish to take their actor training to the next level.

HOW MANY STUDENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED EACH YEAR? We generally accept 20-25 new students each year.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO  FOR THE AUDITION? Please prepare two contrasting memorized monologues, one classical (preferably Shakespeare), and one contemporary, not to exceed 4 minutes, total.  There will also be an interview component to the audition. Plan to arrive a few minutes prior to your scheduled audition time to complete paperwork.

COVID-19 PROTOCOLS As with other theaters and training programs across the country, we have been affected by the pandemic. Our third term of class was conducted remotely in 2020, and our sleep-away programs have been transformed to at-home experiences this year, but we look forward to safely returning to normal activities as soon as we are able. We have been taking in and implementing measures to ensure the health and safety of our students, families, and staff, in order to continue to provide high-impact theater arts training for young people. Our decisions have been guided by CDC and MPS recommendations, state and local government requirements and protocols, and listening to the needs of our staff and the families that we serve. We have been extra careful and not only met recommendations and guidelines, but often exceeded them. To that end, we don't know what the school year will look like yet, but are prepared to pivot quickly from in-person class to a virtual/remote format if need be. We have been meeting the challenges of this age head-on: last year's Company was buoyed by our online programming starting in March, and we have no intention of letting you down. For now, we'll all have to be nimble as we navigate these uncharted waters.

Accordingly, we will hold auditions via Zoom this year. You will be sent a link to a Zoom meeting a couple of days before your audition.

If you have any questions, please contact Matt Daniels, Director of the Young Company, at [email protected].
