High school students ages 16 and older are welcome to join the Youth Crew. Each session will start with a brief update about the farm and a practical lesson about the work of the day. We then will move onto essential farming tasks, like field preparation, weeding, trellising, pruning, and/or spreading compost and woodchips.
Youth Crew is a great way to learn about what it takes to grow healthy, fresh produce, and to run a certified-organic farm. Farming is physically demanding. You need to be able to lift, bend, and kneel repeatedly. We work in all weather conditions - hot or cold, wet or dry. The only thing that brings us out of the field is dangerous weather, like lightning or tornadoes. There is no such thing as poor weather, only poor clothing, so come prepared with proper clothing and accessories; rain gear if it’s raining, hat and sunscreen if it is sunny, etc.
All participants in LexFarm Volunteer Programs must register and sign a liability waiver annually. All participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian register for them and sign the waiver.
Youth Crew members must commit to 4 Thursday mornings in July (July 7, 14, 21 and 28) or in August (August 4, 11, 18, 25). Participants can earn community service hours.
