Cal, a former New York lawyer, and his gourmet chef wife, Ellen, are living their dream. They have quit their lucrative jobs and gone deep into debt to open a small, elegant restaurant. Cal's main preoccupation is paying back their start-up loan, and that means packing in the customers. Chef Ellen is preoccupied with the food's quality and stopping Cal from sampling the ingredients. As befits a play about food, this one is all about appetites: hers to cook, his to eat, and those of the diners who act out their own private dramas over dinner. There's a sensual middle-aged couple who go into paroxysms of ecstasy just reading the menu, three crass career women who struggle to order and/or eat, and, Elizabeth, a shy and neurotic writer who is dining with her prospective publisher. The play explores the relationship of each character to food while revealing everyone’s sensual, sexual, and social appetites, as well. The resulting compote is delicious.
