REACH Home 2019/20 MEALS

Please sign up below to bring a meal to REACH Home 2019/20. Your generosity and compassion are greatly appreciated and are vital in helping us serve those in need in our community.
The 2019-20 REACH Home is at 720 West Main Street, between Saints Peter & Paul Coptic Orthodox Church and the Joseph Hall Funeral Home. (Google Maps identifies it as “Coptic Monastery-St. Shenouda.”) The shelter will be open 24 hours, seven days a week to those in need of housing and other services.  There will be paid staff on-site at all times as well as volunteers.  During the day, we will have food and drinks available to our guests to take as they would like.  This includes fruit, breads, snacks, water, and other donations that we receive.
Our goal is to provide at least one well-balanced meal to our guests each day the shelter is open. Below is some information for providing and serving the meal. Please feel free to contact Carol Santos  ([email protected] or cell: 585.703.8929 call or text) if you have any questions or ideas.

If you'd like to help, but don't have the time to cook & serve a meal, you can sign up below to donate money that the shelter managers can use to arrange for a take-out meal (pizza, etc.) to be brought in.

Plan enough food for about 35 people (there is potential for an increase in this number if we are designated a warming shelter. In this case, we will do our best to make sure everyone is aware of the increase here on the signup, via e-mails, and on our website.) This includes our guests, staff, and volunteers. We have silverware, plates, and cups. There are also tables and chairs to serve the food and for people to sit at for the meal. We encourage your group to eat with us so please make enough for yourselves as well. Any leftovers will be put away for REACH Home guests to eat for lunch the next day.

We have found that people enjoy hearty meals.  Good options include ham, fried chicken, pork, sausage, scrambled eggs, bacon, sandwiches, soups, stews & chili, breads, lasagna, potatoes & rice, casseroles, hot vegetables, etc.  Salads are generally not big sellers.  Feel free to make one – we want to encourage healthy eating – but it does not have to be very big. Fruit (i.e. oranges, bananas, etc.) is a great option as well. When you sign up, please indicate the main dish you plan to bring in the "Comment" field and be sure to give us a phone number (preferably a cell phone) where you, or someone in your party, can be reached in case of last minute changes or no show.
We have drinking water, coffee, and tea available but we encourage you to bring some beverages.  Approximately 2-3 gallons of cider, juice, punch, milk, etc. would be greatly appreciated. No alcoholic beverages please. *Coffee is one of our biggest needs. Please consider bringing along a pound or two of ground coffee if you can!
We have running water and electricity. The shelter has several crock pots. If you would like to make arrangements to pick up a couple to cook in and bring back to the shelter, please let Bridget Carey know.

**Food should be hot and ready to serve. There is a microwave, but no stove or oven.
We operate along the lines of a “carry in / carry out church potluck supper”. Bring any particular serving utensils you might need, i.e., soup ladles, tongs, spatulas, etc. Please consider leaving the utensils. Upon the closing of the shelter the utensils and kitchen supplies will be distributed to our residents who have been placed in housing and are setting up their apartments from scratch or shared with House of Mercy and St. Joe's House of Hospitality.

We are always in need of plastic wrap, tin foil, zip loc bags/baggies, garbage bags, and containers to store leftovers.
Dinner is served at 5:30 PM. Please plan to arrive in time to set-up and serve by 5:30 pm. For quick meal drop-offs (but not for extended parking) use the narrow driveway between 720 West Main and the funeral home to access the rear porch primary entry. Beware of the tight turn here from West Main. This small lot is for handicapped and REACH staff parking only. Please do not block parking for the adjacent funeral home. After meal drop-off you can park in the front semicircular drive. Please follow this link for further information on parking http://reachadvocacy.org/volunteer-opportunities/parking/

There is parking available behind the building. Please knock and enter through the back door. A staff member will greet you and assist with unloading and preparing for dinner. The serving and eating should take approximately ½ hour and then please allow time for clean-up. You are welcome to stay as long as you would like to visit with our guests.

If you find that you are unable to provide a meal on the date that you are signed up for PLEASE LET US KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE so that we can make other arrangements.

We would love to share pictures of your group volunteering and serving food to our residents on the REACH website and Facebook page. If taking pictures of, or with, residents please ask their permission first. Email all pictures to [email protected] so we can post them!

We advise that any valuables be locked in the trunk of your car or kept on your person at all times.

Visit our website at reachadvocacy.org and/or facebook page https://www.facebook.com/shelterforhomelessrochester/ for the most up-to-date needs list and news!

In addition to daily meals each year we need to raise approximately $60,000 to open and maintain this temporary shelter. Your donations have been central to making this happen. Please consider making a tax deductible gift to the REACH Home. Checks can be made out to "REACH ADVOCACY", marked for "Shelter Fund",  and mailed to REACH Advocacy, P.O. Box 10845, Rochester, NY 14610.
