How do I get into the shelter kitchen?
The Soup Kitchen is located at the Lake Street Church on the corner of Chicago Avenue and Grove Street, 1458 Chicago Avenue Evanston , IL, 60201
The volunteer entrance is in the alley behind the church. For those volunteers who arrive first, there is a parking space for the pastor (north side of church), just in front of that is a set of stairs that go down to an entrance; ring the bell and or knock on the door. Staff are there by 5:30 p.m.
For other volunteers arriving later, from the alley, the entrance is an enclosed back door up a short set of steps. The shelter kitchen door locks behind you, so you’ll just need to make sure to close it tight at the end of the night.
Parking: You may park in the alley (with hazard lights on) only to unload food. Free street parking on Sunday.
Volunteer Log: There is a volunteer log that we ask you to sign, this is located on the serving table by the silverware.
What about cooking equipment at the shelter?
You will need to bring your own knives, and there are some utensils and pots/pans available for your use. Some of them may be rather worn, so if you have a favorite tool, feel free to bring your own.
What do I have to do to clean up?
Wash and put away all cookware used to prepare dinner. Residents will wash dishes, run dishwasher and empty the garbage.
What if there are leftovers?
Put away leftovers in the refrigerator, please wrap and date (sharpie)
