Congregations for the Homeless
We would like to invite volunteers to come back into the shelter community to serve meals! However, as there is still an active risk of COVID-19, we will be restricting volunteers to serving meals outside in the shelter courtyard area, continuing our mandatory mask policy, and strongly encouraging vaccines for anyone medically able to be vaccinated. It is not mandatory to serve the meal this summer, we will assume that every meal will just be dropped off and served by staff unless we are contacted.
If you or others in your group are interested in serving meals (not just dropping off), sign up by emailing Brent at [email protected]. The meals will be served at 12pm for lunch and 6pm for dinner, and early arrival is necessary to ensure smooth and timely service. Find a staff member, or call 425-502-9958, and then proceed to setup at the table provided. We ask that volunteers bring their own utensils to serve. Staff will provide plates and eating utensils, and the clients will come out the door to get food and go wherever they like for the meal.
Volunteers will be welcome to stay and safely socialize with clients in the courtyard for a brief time before and after meal times. We would like to remind everyone of the importance of boundaries between volunteers and clients, and when you sign up to serve outdoors, we will be communicating Volunteer Policies.
We serve dinner at 6:00 pm and lunch at 12pm, please aim to arrive no later than 5:30pm and 11:30am respectively. Our address is 515 116th Ave NE Bellevue, WA 98004. We are behind the Ford Autonation Overflow parking lot, on the left side of the gray building. You can park in any of the available spaces at the front and drop off your food at the table under the blue tent near the entrance of the shelter. Please let staff know that you have brought the meal.
What to Donate
We serve meals for approximately 100 men during much of the year, but only about 80 during the summer months. Only the meal is needed, we will provide plates, napkins, and utensils. Extras, such as fruit, salad, beverages, and desserts are more than welcome but not required. If possible, please include a list of common allergens.
100 servings is a lot! Here are some resources to help create a nutritious meal for a large group:
For a sense of scale here are some sample meals the shelter staff prepare for lunch:
10lbs dry pasta, 24 cups sauce, 100 + rolls
4 large (12in by 20in) aluminum trays of casserole
Tacos with 15lbs ground meat, 6lbs beans, 20 cups cooked rice, 100+ tortillas
We understand that this can seem like a big task to tackle! Consider connecting with friends or family, supplementing the meal with extras such as salad or dessert, and/or splitting up the meal between a few people. Please try to have all of the food or supplemental dishes delivered to the shelter altogether. Additionally, we are happy to open up more slots on a given day if you would like to work with others on preparing the meal, so they can sign up for the same day as well - just reach out! If you need any advice or have any questions, feel free to email [email protected]
Please review King Country’s Safe Food Handling Practices to ensure the safety of the men.
If you have any questions about what to bring for the meal, please reach out to [email protected]
We are grateful for your continued support and wonderful food!
