Saint Robert Bellarmine Parish Community Outreach
Who: A team of 2-4 people. Families welcome.
What: Prepare, serve, and clean up after the evening meal at the Lazarus House Holly Street residence, which is an emergency shelter that is home to about 25-30 individuals and families.
When: The 3rd Sunday of every month, year round, 4:30-7:30 pm.
Where: 48 Holly Street, Lawrence, MA (right behind Central Catholic High School). Shelter phone number if you need it is 978-794-8447.
What to expect: Everything you need is already onsite at Holly Street. Lazarus House has a meal plan so when you get there at 4:30 pm, you check in with the office staff to see what is on the menu for the evening and for any guidance you need. It is often just a matter of reheating trays of prepared food and then preparing a salad or sides and getting a dessert together. You set the tables in the dining room with placemats and silverware. You serve dinner at 6:00 pm cafeteria style from inside the kitchen area. The shelter residents have after dinner chores and will clear off the tables and put the dishes into bus bins in the dining room. You will take care of running dishes through the dishwasher/sanitizer, as well as washing pots and pans and tidying up kitchen. You are done at about 7:30 pm.
If you would like to provide the meal on any of these dates but are not available to serve, please let Karen know ahead of time so we can coordinate any changes in the meal plan with the staff at the shelter.
Please note: this is not the same as Bread & Roses meal preparation! That is a whole other monthly commitment where we provide the food for a taco meal for the Bread & Roses soup kitchen. For that service, we collect your food donations at St. Robert's and deliver to Bread & Roses but do not serve there.
