Winter Relief

2020 Winter Relief

First Presbyterian Church (FPC) and St. Anne’s Episcopal Church (SAC) will be providing food and shelter from Monday Feb 17 through Monday Feb 24, 2020 for about 25 people who do not have access to a warm meal or a warm place to stay for the night.  This is part of the Winter Relief program coordinated by the Arundel House of Hope.   

Please support this important work by signing up for one or more of the volunteer roles below. This also provides an opportunity for you to get to know people from the other church so, where you can, volunteer for your church's designated slot (FPC or SAC). 

All activities take place at First Presbyterian Church, Fellowship Hall, 171 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, MD 21401


Daily activities

  • Breakfast - 6:00 - 7:00 am.  Prepare, serve and clean up.  Guests will clean tableware.
  • Daily laundry - Pick up laundry bags of towels by 10:00 am, return clean towels by 5:15 pm. 
  • Lunch - Prepare brown bag lunches for the following day.  Deliver to the shelter between 4:00 and 8:00 pm the day before they are to be served.
  • Help desk - 4:00 - 6:30 pm weekdays.  Set out drinks and snacks, provide guidance to dinner preparers, greet and sign-in guests, answer questions, and dispense medications.
  • Dinner - 5:00 - 8:00 pm.  Prepare, serve & clean-up dinner.  **Note:  Please remove all leftovers.  Guests will clean tableware.
  • Shower support - 2 shifts between 4:30 - 9:30 pm weekdays / 3:00 - 8:00 pm weekend.  Manage sign-up sheet, provide shower suplies as needed, usher guests to Kinhart Center or Zimmerman Wilson house (both are on the FPC campus).
  • Night monitor - Two volunteers monitor though the night, ideally one with prior experience.

Special activities

  • Set up team - Monday February 17 - Unload U-Haul and set up shelter.
  • Baked goods - Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  Can be delivered throughout the day.
  • Laundry Coordination - Thursday, February 20 - At 6:45 am pick up guests bagged laundry at FPC and transport to Crystal Cleaning Laundromat, 7446 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd, Glen Burnie, MD 21061.  At approximately 7:45 am guests will arrive at laundromat to launder their own clothing.  Money for the laundry machines and detergent will be provided.  When completed (no later than noon) transport clean bags of laundry to FPC and place in the Fellowship Hall. 
  • Weekend Monitors - Morning 8:00 am to noon, afternoon noon to 4:00 pm.  Supervise shelter, dispense medications, stock snacks and drinks.
  • Final Laundry - Monday February 24 - wash all linens, towels, etc.  Return no later than noon on Wednesday.
  • Break down team - Monday, February 24 - Break down shelter and load U-Haul.
