Look Who’s Talking… about SignUpGenius

It’s always a little scary when you go to the mailbox and pull out an official-looking government envelope that is addressed to you. Not that I have anything to hide… but I guess I’ve seen so many science fiction movies that my imagination goes a little wild. I received an official government envelope the other day at my house and I am happy to report that the letter did not involve a summons to report to Area 51 for a top-secret experimental human trial. Whew.

No, the letter was actually from North Carolina Senator Kay Hagan. Apparently she must have seen the recent article in The Washington Post, which featured SignUpGenius and talked about how it can be used to plan meals for people in need. Her letter read:

Dear Mr. Rutledge,

Congratulations on the success of your website, SignUpGenius.com. Thank you for your efforts to provide food, support and resources for families during their time of need.

Your virtual sign-up sheet allows citizens across the nation to organize their giving in a simple, effective and efficient manner. I am proud that North Carolina is able to boast such an innovative project and I encourage you to continue these endeavors. Congratulations once again.

All the best,
Kay R. Hagan

I am going to keep this letter and if the government ever does try to lock me away and run experiments on my brain, I will definitely contact Kay Hagan for assistance.

Oh - And in other news… SignUpGenius was recently featured in an article at Faith Village as one of the “Top Online Tools for Small Groups.” Check out the article!

Anyways, I gotta get going... there's already an unmarked white van parked outside the office. I may have said to much...

SignUpGenius Co-Founder in the News

While this isn't directly related to SignUpGenius or group leadership - I thought it might be interesting for those that read the blog and know me from interactions related to this site.  My wife was recently interviewed by a local paper in Charlotte and they wrote an article about our family and our story of adoption. We're hoping it will spur more people to be involved in caring for orphan and indigent children in whatever way they feel called.  Check it out:

Our swim club, the Iowa City Eels, has been using your signup service for the past year and a half for volunteer signup, concessions, and staffing our officials' pool. It has reduced the confusion of multiple e-mails when we plan meets and other events.

I am so appreciative that you have made this a free service to volunteer organizations. Our parent-run club is as frugal as possible so that we can afford to pay our professional coaches and serve our kids as best we can. Your time and effort is greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much.

Thanks for the kind words Cheryl. We're glad to help and will continue to try and make it better for your club!

Welcome to the Website for Lion-Beavers

Posted by: Dan Rutledge on 9/27/10 04:24 PM EST

I went on a leadership retreat this weekend.  As part of the training, we took a personality test. I like those kinds of tests... mostly because it is impossible to fail them.  This one happened to be the DISC model, which breaks down personality types into four categories:

  • Dominance – relating to control, power and assertiveness
  • Influence – relating to social situations and communication
  • Steadiness – relating to patience, persistence, and thoughtfulness
  • Conscientiousness – relating to structure and organization

There is also a similar test out there which instead labels the four categories as animals: lion, otter, golden retriever, and beaver, respectively.

So anyway... It was no big surprise to me (or my wife) that I ranked pretty high in the "C" category, with some elements of "D."  Here's the wikipedia description of the "C" personality:   "People with high 'C' styles adhere to rules, regulations, and structure. They like to do quality work and do it right the first time. High 'C' people are careful, cautious, exacting, neat, systematic, diplomatic, accurate, and tactful."

Basically, we "C's" are busy beavers -- hard workers that like systems and organization.  In addition, "D's" are leaders that like to organize others.

Does that combination remind you of a certain website?

I had to laugh a little bit... because SignUpGenius is basically a website designed specifically for "C" and "D" personalities. All our sign up creators are people that organize, plan, and lead!

I guess this explains why I always get along so fabulously with our users.  Lions and Beavers of the world unite!  Drop me a note if you're a "C" or "D" too!

I'm glad to hear you have some "I" traits... because the "I" folks are the ones that are always telling their many, many friends about us! :)

I'm more an I and C person.
