WHAT IT IS:
Junior Great Books is a national reading program which OLG’s PSO leads for grades 1 through 6. This program gives kids an opportunity to explore, question and enjoy good literature. Junior Great Books exposes children to higher-level reading, vocabulary and comprehension. Participants are expected to read stories at home before weekly meetings. Included in the books are open-ended questions to stimulate discussion. The goal is to instill the love of reading in kids at an early age.
PARENT VOLUNTEERS FOR GRADES 1-3:
Four parent volunteers will be needed per 1st through 3rd grade class: three Discussion Leaders and one Classroom Lead. The Classroom Lead will be in charge of communication about JGB to the parents and other discussion leaders. The Classroom Lead and Discussion Leaders will work together to lead the Junior Great Books classroom discussions during lunch.
Parents who volunteer for JGB in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grades will meet in their child’s classroom during lunchtime. Parent volunteers will help with reading the story, asking discussion questions, and leading the activity. Written lesson plans for each story will be provided, which makes volunteering pretty simple! Preparing for JGB takes less than 1 hour per week, so being a Junior Great Books discussion leader is an easy, fun way to be more involved with your child.
PARENT VOLUNTEERS FOR GRADES 4-6:
At least two parent volunteers will be needed for each of the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. The grade level coordinators will organize a time to meet and send out communication to the parents. Generally, grades 4, 5, and 6 meet once a month after school or during lunch/recess in the months of February, March and April. Additionally, the grade level coordinators will work with the teachers to select a book to read. Students will be responsible for locating a library copy of the book, or purchasing their own copy of the book. Students will come to the meeting with their own questions to discuss, so it is more of a facilitator role than a teaching role. The grade level coordinators will recruit students from their respective grade level, therefore no student signup is necessary at this time.
