WHAT IT IS: Junior Great Books is a national reading program, which gives kids an opportunity to explore, question and enjoy good literature. Junior Great Books exposes children to higher-level reading, vocabulary and comprehension. Participants are expected to read stories at home before weekly meetings. Included in the books are open-ended questions to stimulate discussion. The goal is to instill the love of reading in kids at an early age.
WHY VOLUNTEER: Parent volunteers will be paired up and assigned to a small group of students. Written lesson plans for each story will be provided, which makes volunteering pretty easy! Preparing for class takes less than 1 hour per week, so being a Junior Great Books discussion leader is an easy, fun way to be more involved with your child.
WHEN AND WHERE: Discussion groups for 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades will take place in the students' respective classroom during the lunch portion only of their lunch/recess period. The program will run for 6 weeks following Catholic Schools Week. Students will eat a cold lunch while reading the story, followed by discussion.
1st Grade: Wednesdays February 6 through March 13, 2019 (6 meetings)
2nd Grade: Thursdays, February 7 through March 14, 2019 (6 meetings)
3rd Grade: Mondays, February 4 through March 11, 2019 (5 meetings; no school Feb 18)
***A brief, mandatory training/planning session for parent volunteers will take place January 17, 2019 at 8:30 am in the Church Dining Room.
Four parent volunteers will be needed per class: three Discussion Leaders and one Classroom Lead. The Classroom Lead will be in charge of communication about JGB to the parents and other discussion leaders. The Classroom Lead and Discussion Leaders will work together to lead the Junior Great Books classroom discussions during lunch.
This is a PSO run program. Please direct all questions to the JGB Coordinator, not the teachers.
