Acolyte List

2019 Acolyte Volunteering

Acolytes are members of the congregation who help with a worship service.  At First UMC, our acolytes typically help at the beginning of the service by lighting the candles and at the end of the service, they extinguish the candles and leave the sanctuary in procession. On certain Sundays, they may be called to assist in other ways as determined by the pastor and worship planning team.  In short, they are leaders of worship.

Their task is as important a ministry as that of choir members, musicians, and ushers. The program is also important because it offers people of all ages and abilities, especially children and youth, an opportunity to get involved in the work of the church and make a positive contribution to worship. Their service also provides a fine opportunity for the pastor and staff to establish a closer relationship with them and to better identify their needs as young Christians.

The basic requirements for fulfilling this leadership role in worship is to have the strength to carry the candle lighter slowly up the aisle.  We do have step stools to help an acolyte reach the high candles and/or can pair acolytes with a taller mentor who will give them an assist when needed.

Please look over your calendar and select dates when your child is willing and able to serve.  While each week we traditionally have only one acolyte serve, each date has two volunteer slots: primary acolyte and back-up acolyte.  We hope this helps alleviate challenges when illness or bad weather prevent someone from attending.

Training for what to do and how to do it is available for all interested volunteers.
