Valley Community Center 2019
Thank you for serving our neighbors at Valley Community Center! Loving our community happens all year long! Join us in these Love You Des Moines volunteer opportunities.
1. Imagination Stations
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9-11 am
Join in on the fun by overseeing a drop-in activity station for young families. Each day is different, so sign up to lend a hand as kids play and imagine with crafts, games, snacks and more.
2. Love You Des Moines Friday
Third Friday of Every Month
We are excited to announce Love You Des Moines Fridays! Check out this one-day version of Love You Des Moines Days on the third Friday of each month, beginning Friday, July 19. We’re celebrating neighbors by inviting them to special FREE activities, in addition to our regular programming. Just like the nine days of Love You Des Moines Days, each Love You Des Moines Friday is unique and different from the one before! If you have an activity idea for Love You Des Moines Fridays, email Lisa Lewis.
3. Strengthening Families - Childcare or Meal Prep
Mondays from 5-8 pm beginning September 16
We are partnering with Iowa State University Extension to offer Strengthening Families, an evidence-based, skill-building program for 10 to 14-year-olds and their parents. We need your help to make it possible! Volunteers are needed to help prepare a meal and to provide childcare for participants’ younger children.
4. Café Staffing
Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays from 9-11:30 am
Do you like meeting new people while lending a hand? We need friendly, welcoming volunteers to join us for weekly (or every other week) shifts at the Mapelnol Café at the Valley Community Center. This is a fun way to get to know people and invest in new friendships. We want you to be a part of our team and help us love our community!
5. Carpet Team
Help us get ready for large events by joining the carpet team! Volunteer alongside others to transform court space into carpeted banquet space in the Event Hall at the Valley Community Center. Commitment: Accept a request as often as you’d like! You’ll be contacted several days (or even weeks) in advance about an upcoming need.
6. Upward Sports Coordinator
As an Upward Sports Coordinator (football or basketball), you have the opportunity to make an important impact on the lives of many coaches, referees, players and families. As a coordinator you are able to lead our sports program and encourage the development of our youth by developing them mentally, athletically, spiritually and socially. Along with a co-coordinator, you will have leadership over game day administration of games, halftime program, coaches, officials, volunteers and the facility. Commitment is a 10-week sports session (plus some pre-work during evaluations, coaches training and referee training).
7. Chapel Ridge Food Pantry
You can help families with food insecurity select food items from a local Mobile Food Pantry Truck. The mobile food pantry recently added a new stop at the Chapel Ridge West apartments, a multicultural complex just a few blocks from us. Come alongside the food pantry staff to help our neighbors from 3:45-6:15 PM on the 2nd and 4th Mondays!
