Organize A Coat or Clothing Drive

Timing your drive

Coats: The ideal time to organize a coat drive is between September through early December. This allows us to have coats in the hands of children BEFORE the weather gets cold. We need coats in all sizes, from infant through adult XXL. The key is style and quality. We are looking for coats that children and teens will wear to school, that will not only keep them warm but allow them to feel good about themselves.

Clothing - Ask for seasonally appropriate clothing

We collect fall/winter clothing from August through February and spring/summer clothing from March through July. Please emphasize "seasonally appropriate" with your drive. Our storage space is limited and we like to distribute the clothing as quickly as possible.

The Sharing Shelf is Westchester's Clothing Bank for Children founded to combat clothing insecurity among low-income children and families in our community and meet basic material needs such as socks, underwear, diapers, feminine hygiene and toiletries. We collect new and gently used clothing for infants, children and teens. That clothing is sorted by quality, size, season and gender then distributed to local, low income children at no cost through nonprofits, schools, hospitals and community groups in Westchester County. The children we serve receive a week's worth of seasonally appropriate clothing matched to their sizing needs.

Language to use for donations:

Clothing, coats and shoes should be in clean, wearable condition ready for immediate distribution. Please do not donate out of season items or clothing, coats or shoes that are dirty, stained, ripped, torn or damaged. Donations of new socks and new underwear in all sizes are greatly appreciated.
 

How to bring us your donations

Bring all donations in closed plastic bags no larger than a kitchen garbage bag. Remove all hangers and take all shoes out of boxes.
