About Chelsea Hicks Foundation and Stand Together Week:
Encouraging seriously ill children to comply with hospital procedures is never an easy task. Empowering these children with the ability to play, pretend and laugh while going through treatment for cancer or other life-threatening illnesses is the goal of Chelsea’s Closet. Remembering that they are children before they are patients, our mobile costume closet program empowers hospitalized kids to be anything they want to be - transforming them from a young patient resigned to their hospital bed into the Superhero or Princess needed to combat their disease.
With the support of volunteers, Chelsea’s Closet provides seriously ill hospitalized children and their siblings an opportunity to parade through hospital halls wearing their new costumes (chosen by them from our mobile closet), work on craft projects, and enjoy snacks with family and friends. Research shows that active therapeutic play can promote normal development and significantly reduce the psychological and physiological stress for children facing serious medical challenges.
Stand Together Week is the Portland Timbers, Thorns FC, and T2 citywide volunteer initiative that brings the community together to support local nonprofit organizations. The week engages hundreds of supporters, including players, coaches, ambassadors and front office staff who work with various non-profits in the community. Since 2012, Stand Together Week has mobilized 5,395 volunteers to provide the Portland metro area with 18,290 hours of service at more than 226 events benefitting youth and the environment.
