Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade. We need volunteers for the Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade to act as unit leaders, leading the balloons and dressing up in costume to be on the floats. Also, we need assistance with set-up and break-down. The parade takes place the Saturday before Thanksgiving, in downtown Silver Spring.
The hours are from 7:30am to 1:30pm (you need to be present the whole time) on Saturday, November 23. Dress warmly, as you will be outside. You should try and wear black as your outside layer color. Once you arrive, you will be assigned a position and given directions about your volunteer job. The parade is a couple of hours long, so when you get through the parade once, you should go back to the beginning and the volunteer coordinator will put you on another float/balloon. The same is true after the parade, for clean-up/costume sorting/ float break-down.
Check-in for volunteers will be at the Silver Spring Civic Building, One Veterans Place at the corner of Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street, 20910.
Directions:
From Metro: Take the red line to the Silver Spring Metro Station. After exiting on Wayne Avenue, walk three short blocks north to the intersection of Wayne and Fenton Street. Turn left on Fenton and the building will be at the next intersection with Ellsworth Drive.
From 495:
The roads will be closing for the parade. If you are dropping someone off, take 495 to Colesville Road South (Exit 30B). After approximately 1.5 miles turn left onto Cedar Avenue (which is Spring Street on the other side). Turn right onto Roeder Road. Drop the volunteer to walk one block to Ellsworth Drive. To exit after drop off turn right onto Fenton Street and right onto Colesville Road.
If you need to park: Take 495 to Colesville Road South (Exit 30B). After approximately 1.5 miles turn left onto Cedar Avenue (which is Spring Street on the other side). Turn right onto Wayne Avenue. Continue past Fenton Street and turn right into the Wayne Avenue Garage which is available at no cost on Wayne.
***The Town Center Garage on Ellsworth is being used for parade line-up and there is absolutely no parking allowed. You will be towed. Do not park in the Whole Foods Lot, you will be towed.
See you then! FYI- Student Service Learning Hours are available. Paperwork will be on-site.
