Making God Laugh follows one typical American family over the course of thirty years' worth of holidays. Starting in 1980, Ruthie and Bill's grown children -- a priest, an aspiring actress, and a former football star -- all return home, where we learn of their plans and dreams as they embark on their adult lives. The empty-nester parents contend with their own changes, too, as old family rituals are trotted out and ancient tensions flare up. As time passes, the family discovers that, despite what we may have in mind, we often arrive at unexpected destinations.
We are casting the following roles:
Ruthie: The matriarch. She starts the play in her late 40s/early 50s and ages 30 years (as do all the characters). She's bossy, authoritative, means well but tries to steer the world more than humanly possible. She needles her family, but deep down she really loves them all.
Bill: The patriarch. He loves everyone and goes-with-the-flow. He wouldn't hurt anyone's feelings and desperately loves his wife and kids. Being Ruthie's husband and a father are his life's work.
Richard: The eldest child. Mid-to-late 20s at the start. He wants to conquer the world and is always looking for ways to do that. He buys the latest everything and dresses stylish. A one-time football hero, he misses that kind of spotlight.
Maddie: The middle child. Mid-twenties at the start. An aspiring actress and a strong-willed person who loves her family. She is closest to Thomas, and they have a long-standing tradition of picking on Richard. She is the only one of the kids to have moved from her hometown. She lives in New York City where she struggles with life. She and her mother have a difficult relationship
Thomas: The youngest. The baby and the "good son". A nice, even-tempered guy who thought his life was on a plan. A devoutly religious man studying for the priesthood at the beginning of the show, he is funny, warm and not at all rigid in his approach to life. He means very well, but his life turns out differently than he has planned.
