SPIKE Team 293
Hello Parents of Team SPIKE! Robotics season is underway and as the team tackles this year’s FIRST “Infinite Recharge” challenge, we need to keep them “charged up” for the next couple of months. It is important that as parents we share the responsibility of providing nourishing snacks and meals. Our students spend long days in the shop and they need to feel energized so they can focus on their work and maximize their efforts. Here are some guidelines:
WEEKDAYS: Our team has grown and we are excited about that but need to scale down weekly snacks to maximize shop time. If you sign up for a weekday please provide a grab-n-go snack bar(granola bar, cereal bar, or protein bar) and one piece of fruit per student (banana, clementines, apples, or pears) There are approx 55-60 members including mentors on any given day during the week.
Friday DINNERS and Sat LUNCHES: We’ll take care of all the papergoods, just drop off crock pots or tin trays of your specialty at the designated time. The kids look forward to these sit-down meals. It’s a great bonding opportunity for the team, and they need to take these breaks. Some of their favorite meals are tacos, pasta dishes, chilli, hot dogs and hamburgers, potato bar, fried chicken, all good options. Pizza is reserved for late build nights or days that Pets4Spike needs to fill a slot. If you are able to specify in advance what you plan to bring it does minimize the chance for duplicates, but it isn’t necessary. Since we often have alumni and extra mentors volunteering on the weekends a safe estimate is 60 people.
SUNDAYS: We have decided to ask that the students eat a filling lunch BEFORE coming to the shop on Sundays to maximize shop time. Please arrive ready to work and we will provide a snack bar if needed. Thank you!
QUANTITIES: In an effort to keep quantities reasonable we have decided to divvy up the snacks and meals to give everyone the option of cooking for half the team or the entire team. It can be somewhat daunting to prepare a large meal and it helps to spread the work around too.
CHANGES from last year….
WATER BOTTLES: Send in gallons instead! The students decided as a group to reduce waste and adopt a green alternative- refilling their own water bottles. Please refrain from bringing cases of water bottles. Water is the preferred beverage over sodas and juice to because of cost and sugar, unless it is a special team event.
MONETARY DONATIONS in lieu of food- we understand that work obligations and timing may keep some of you from being able to contribute snacks or a meal, and cooking for a large group isn't everyone’s passion. So this year we thought it would be helpful to accept checks if you need us to “order out”or pick up a snack for you- we are happy to do that. Checks can be made payable to “Pets4Spike” and sent to: PETS4SPIKE PO Box 193 Pennington, NJ 08534. Pets4Spike is a non-profit status and contributions are tax deductible. Please send a quick email to Treasurer Renee Warias at [email protected] if a check is in the mail with any special instructions, thx!
PAPERGOODS/PANTRY ITEMS: Included on the sign-up are various papergoods and non-perishable food items. We have limited storage space so these items will need to be replenished so keep an eye on the sign-up. No need to bring plates, cups, utensils if you are bringing food- we have it:) Bulk boxes of these items are welcome and a great way to contribute if you’d rather not cook, they can be dropped off any day by your student.
Thanks in advance for your continued commitment to the team. Please feel free to contact Sharon Kiefer at [email protected] or call/text (609)280-4090 with any questions. Anushka Agarwal is our student food coordinator among other roles and more than happy to take suggestions or answer questions from the team regarding food. Please review the available slots below and click on the button to sign up. Thank you!
