Emergency Shelter Meal providers
Housing Forward Emergency Shelter (also known as PADS) operates on a rotating basis in congregations from September 17 2018 - May 14 2019 from 7:30pm - 7:00am. The program is staffed by volunteers in shifts throughout the evening and early morning who work under the leadership of a volunteer Site Captain. We are seeking individuals and/or groups who will help to support a night of shelter once a month for the duration of the season by providing breakfast, lunch or dinner. Please look at the general descriptions of what it means to be a meal provider below. After you sign up for a slot and it is confirmed by a staff member, you will be provided additional information regarding shelter location and meal options. Shelter site capacities range from 20 - 60 individuals. All shelter locations are within the Oak Park, Forest Park and Berwyn area.
Dinner providers take responsibility for providing a team who plan, supply food, prepare and serve a complete hot meal to clients at a specific shelter site between 6:30pm - 8:30pm, and clean up after the meal by 9:30pm. Clients enter the site at 7:30pm. Dinner menus are decided by each group but typically include salad, entree, vegetables, milk, juice and dessert. Some teams serve the same thing each month and others change the menu. Ground coffee, cutlery and paper goods are provided.
Lunch providers take responsibility for providing food and supplies, preparing, packing and delivering a sack meal for clients to take with them at the end of shelter. We ask that lunches be delivered to the shelter site between 6:30 - 7:30pm on the night signed up for. Although they are distributed the next morning as they leave, this is considered one of the three meals provided as part of the previous night’s accommodations. Shelter sites have space to refrigerate lunches so if sandwiches are provided that require refrigeration (lunch meat, cheese, mayonnaise etc.) please let someone know they need to go in the fridge or place them there yourself. A typical lunch might include a sandwich, chips or pretzels, a piece of fruit and a beverage. You are encouraged to get creative!
Breakfast providers are responsible for providing food and supplies, preparing and serving a meal to clients at a specific shelter site between 5:30 - 6:30am, and clearing up after the meal by 7:00am. Typical breakfast meals might include cereal and milk, bagels, yogurt, eggs and breakfast meat, pancakes etc. Ground coffee, cutlery and paper goods are provided.

Note: If you sign up for the 5th week of the month, you only need to provide on the months that have a fifth occurrence of that day of the week.
Note: The PADS season runs from September 2018 - May 14 2019. We are in need of individuals able to make a 9 month volunteer commitment providing meals once a month.
