Fall into Dance Saturdays with Erika Jost!  Fall 2018

Dancers dream with their feet...

Without the pressure of a polished finished product for a recital or a show, both the instructor and the dancers have the freedom to invest class time exploring more difficult steps, steps that all members of the group may not yet be able to do. (In a show, we only choreograph the turns and jumps that everyone can do together; in class, each dancer can be pushed to the limits of his or her abilities and can be given the space to work on weak spots.)

One result of this shift in focus is that there is not a lot of opportunity for parents to experience a "finished product" of classwork.  We will work to give you a glimpse of progress, but you will notice increased confidence and enthusiasm for dance and improvements in your dancers' abilities in other shows.

Tap I
Students will learn beginning tap steps and their variations (e.g., shuffle, Maxie Ford, flap). Based in this skill-building, students will learn a new combination in every session to improve their ability to learn new choreography. We will explore the styles of both Broadway tap (widely performed in musical theatre) and rhythm tap (a more modern style that focuses on musicality). Students will be introduced to and practice tap improvisation at the end of each class.
Required attire: Tap shoes.
Saturdays, 10:00-10:45am, September 15, 22, 29; October 13, 20; November 3.
Ages:  Grades 5-12
Class Size: 22- 25 students
Instructor:  Erika Jost

Open Ballet Barre Plus Skill Building
A traditional ballet class with a twist: after the barre, we will focus on turns, jumps, and choreography with a focus on musical theatre dance. Students will learn terminology for feet, arm, and body positions, as well as the basic structure of a ballet class that would allow them to drop into a ballet barre anywhere in the world. (Emphasis on Cecchetti style.) Ballet training improves jumps, turns, strength, flexibility, balance, grace, posture, and general stage presence. Required attire: Ballet shoes (jazz shoes or bare feet are also OK) and form-fitting exercise clothes (leotard and tights encouraged but not required).
Saturdays, 10:45am-Noon, September 15, 22, 29; October 13, 20; November 3.
Ages:  Grades 5-12
Class Size: 15 students
Instructor:  Erika Jost

Musical Theatre Dance
Class starts with a warm-up for stretch and strength-building. We will then focus on progressions across the floor to improve skills like jumps and turns. The second half of class is dedicated to learning choreography, exploring a song from a different musical every week. Recent examples include "Opening Up" from "Waitress," "Shine" from "Billy Elliot," and "It's Hard To Be the Bard" from "Something Rotten." (Song suggestions from students are welcome.) Choreography can include prop work and individual improvisation. Students will have the opportunity to perform in small groups for each other, learning through both their own performance and through observation of their fellow classmates. This class is designed to improve students' ability not only to learn choreography quickly but also to perform that choreography in a way that communicates the story and emotions of a song, similar to what is required in dance auditions.

Ages:  Grades 5-12
Class Size: 15 students
