Pilgrim members and friends volunteer their time and talent at Housing Forward's emergency shelter at 324 N Oak Park Ave (First United Methodist Church) on the fourth Thursday evening and Friday morning of the month from September through May. Pilgrims, during the several shifts listed, volunteer to cook and serve dinner for the homeless and prepare breakfast in the morning on a monthly basis.
Housing Forward, formerly known as PADS, was founded in response to the growing problem of homelessness in Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park. Initially run entirely by volunteers, Housing Forward opened the overnight Emergency Shelter program in seven rotating sites, providing food and shelter to 244 homeless individuals from our community. The program has now expanded to encompass many more communities in west suburban Cook County.
