St. Pauls Lutheran Church
Thank you for volunteering as a greeter.
Did you know that visitors to a new church decide within the first two minutes whether or not the church is friendly! Friendliness is the number 4 reason why people pick a specific church to join! So clearly the Greeter Ministry is vitally important to our efforts to attract and welcome new members to St. Paul’s.
Here are some simple guidelines to follow.
1 – We use this online tool “SignUp Genius” for scheduling Greeters. This tool enables you to select the dates and times when you are available. You will receive an email from SignUp Genius quarterly to make your selections for the upcoming months. You will also receive an email a few days before your scheduled time to remind you of the date of your commitment.
2 – Plan to arrive at church at least 15 minutes before the service starts. Pick up and wear your Greeter name tag found in the Welcome Center in the narthex on the top shelf.
3 – Greet everyone as they enter the church. Your goal is to make all who enter feel welcome, whether they are longtime members or first time visitors, or anything in between.
4 – If you aware someone is a first time visitor, extend a friendly hand and introduce yourself. Try to get their name. If possible, introduce the visitor to congregation members who are entering to attend worship.
5 – If greeting from the back door, ensure they know how to get to the sanctuary. If there are two greeters, one can escort them to the narthex. Otherwise, a simple instruction of right – left – right takes you to the narthex where you will be greeted by ushers will suffice. You can also mention the children’s prayground in the sanctuary if they have children with them. Ushers will assist them by offering large print worship booklets or hearing assistance devices if applicable.
6 – After sharing “the Peace”, front door greeters are responsible for bringing the Communion elements (bread and wine located under the communication bulletin board in the narthex) up to the Altar behind the ushers. Please return down the main aisle to the back of the church.
7 – At the end of the service, please go to the Welcome Center. First time visitors will be invited to join you there so you may give them a welcome gift (these will be located on the shelves under the Welcome Center counter). Try to ensure they have completed a visitor pew card so we may thank them for attending worship with us.
And please remember, even when it is not your week to serve as a greeter, it is the responsibility of every member to speak to that unfamiliar face sitting beside you! And if there is no greeter on duty, feel free to act as one if you wish!
