St. John in the Wilderness
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper
Lent is just around the corner, but first we must feast! Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the Germanic-Old English word "shrive," meaning absolve. Because the day comes right before Lent, a season of fasting and penitence, early Christians would use Shrove Tuesday as an opportunity to go be "shriven" by their confessor.
Today, Shrove Tuesday is more associated with indulgence: the need to use up rich ingredients like butter, milk, sugar, and eggs before the 40-day fast gave rise to the tradition of eating pancakes on on this day.
This year, St. John will host a pancake supper on Shrove Tuesday, February 21, at 5:30pm in the Parish Hall. In addition to pancakes, the Chefs of St. John will serve up sliced ham and fruit salad. Beverages and dessert will also be provided. Please RSVP below by Sunday, February 20.Date: 02/21/2023 (Tue.) Time: 5:30pm - 7:30am EST Location: St. John in the Wilderness
