Levesque Community Life Center Speaker Series

All events will take place live in the Mayor Jean A. Levesque Community Life Center at 401 Bridge Street in Salem, MA. The Levesque Community Life Center adheres to all of the Salem Board of Health’s requirements regarding COVID. Masks must be worn in all public buildings at all times, and social distancing must be maintained.  While no food will be allowed, water will be available.

Admission is free but please register in advance to ensure social distancing.

Jim McAllister, well-known local historian, author, and teacher, on Salem’s “Unsung Heroes.” While they may not be household names, each of the Salem residents whose stories Jim will tell has made important contributions in their chosen fields, whether that be science, art, industry, literature, horticulture, politics, or philanthropy. Join him as he shines a spotlight on a host of deserving Salemites.

Our city’s literary landscape has been transformed by the arrival of nationally prominent writers Richard Hoffman, winner of the 2018 Massachusetts Book Award, and Kathi Aguero, whose new book of poems, World Happiness Index, is due out shortly. Come welcome this dynamic couple to Salem and enjoy their poetry.

Gwen Rosemond, professor, writer, storyteller, performer, human rights advocate. Salem’s African-American community has a history that’s as fascinating as it is long-standing. Our newest city parks are named for Charlotte Forten and for the Remond family. Hear Gwen recount their stories- and other facets of Salem’s often-overlooked history.

Miller, Salem's newly appointed Chief of Police, who, in the light of the national discussion on policing and violence, will discuss our department's use of force policy. According to Miller, a Massachusetts native who served for thirty years on the New York police force, “We need not be afraid of scrutiny." Come find out why.

An Evening of Storytelling. Three well-known Salemites will share their experiences making a home and a forging a career in our city:

Dr. Liz Bradt, veterinarian, outdoor enthusiast, sometimes candidate, and all-time local activist

William Legault, born in Salem, a veteran, former City Councilor, currently runs the Salem Digest social media group.

Senator Joan Lovely, lawyer, 15 years on the Salem City Council, fifth term as state senator and longtime Salem resident.

What’s going on these days at “Salem Hospital”? Dr. David J. Roberts, on staff with the institution (formerly known as the North Shore Medical Center) since 1991, first as Chair of Cardiology, then as Chair of Medicine, and now as President, will provide an update on this Salem landmark, including its alignment with MGH/Brigham and its renovation and construction plans to better serve the community.
