The Nature Detectives Program is for parents and their children ages 3-6. The program includes, stories, songs, hands on models, a short hike on a boardwalk, and an optional activity of going under the natural bridge, which means walking in water in a flowing creek to about ankle depth. Following the hike, the children will have the chance to make a bat model craft.
The Nature Explorers Program is concurrent, and was designed orginally for older siblings of the Nature Detectives. The program includes information about bat anatomy, habits, effects on humans, and habitats. The children will be accompanied by a park staff member and take a longer hike into Connor's Cave. There are many steep wooden steps on a boardwalk, and the cave has flowing water at least ankle depth. Some low areas require ducking, and everyone will wear a park-provided helmet. Bring a flashlight if you've got one, as the cave is unlit. Come and experience total darkness and imagine you're a nocturnal creature, using Connor's cave as your summer home! Following the cave tour, the children will have the chance to make an origami bat.
