Our fall work days will concentrate on a little gem of an oak woods along the far end of Hidden Farm Road. This woods is a beautiful carpet of spring ephemerals in April and May, and is home to a linear Native American mound.
This fall we will remove invasive shrubs and small trees from the perimeter of the woods and use a Billy Goat and hand held brush mowers to remove smaller shrubs within the woods. This is all done in preparation for the county parks sponsored shrub and tree removal day to be held later in the winter. All work will be done in accordance with Dane County Parks and the Wisconsin State Historical Society guidelines for the protection and preservation of Native American mounds. If all work is completed, we will move on to the prairie adjacent to this woods to finish removal of its remaining invasive trees and shrubs.
Sawyers should bring their own equipment including safety garments. Sawyers need to be chainsaw certified by Dane County Parks. Safety and protective equipment will be provided for haulers. Haulers remove cut brush and place in piles to be burned later. No prior experience needed. Billy Goat and brush cutter operators should have experience in using these machines. Safety equipment will be provided.
Dress for the weather. Sturdy shoes or work boots recomended. Depending on the conditions, sunscreen or bug repellant may be needed. Unless there is prolonged heavy rain or threatened severe weather, plan to meet. I will text participants early that morning if we need to reschedule, so please make sure I have your contact information. You can text or email me if I don't already have it.
Meet at the far south end of Hidden Farm Road by 8:45 am so we can begin promptly. You may park along the road, but please do not park adjacent to or across from the woods since we will need to haul brush across the road.
