Christ Church + Washington Parish
With the return to in-person worship services at 11am, we are moving the sign up sheet online for providing the Sunday altar flowers (FAQ is listed below.) The flowers must be at the church by Saturday. To gain entrance to the church, please coordinate with the volunteer sacristan who will be preparing the sanctuary for the Sunday service. If you wish to give the flowers in memory/honor of someone or an event, please send Jennifer an email to include a dedication in the Sunday bulletin.
FAQs/Instructions for Altar Flowers (updated for the COVID-19 pandemic)
Thank you for providing the altar flowers. Below are some guidelines for altar flowers at Christ Church. You will need to make 2 matching bouquets for the high altar and it’s up to you if you would like to do another tall bouquet in front of the lectern (optional).
- Flower color, type: there is no set "rule" for the flower color or type. The best flowers are colorful to stand out against the tan wall and definitely taller is best. A good guideline is to purchase at least 3-4 bouquets divided between the 2 vases, depending on the size of the bouquets and vases. If you purchase bouquets from Costco, 2 bouquets are usually enough as they are large arrangements. We have found that Trader Joe's has some excellent fresh flowers and if you purchase there, 3-4 bouquets are enough. You may have a little extra to take home. Bouquets with a variety of flowers are nice but you can also do an arrangement of all the same flowers. You can be creative and inspired.
-Delivery coordination: Please bring the flowers to the church on Saturday morning or make arrangements with the sacristan for another time on Saturday (see the weekly email reminder for the name of the sacristan). There is also a lockbox in the courtyard with a key that will unlock the sacristy gate and door if your schedule is not compatible with the sacristan’s schedule for setting up the church on Saturday morning. Jennifer can send you the lockbox code if requested.
-Vases and floral arrangements: in the sacristy (the small room next to the altar where the liturgist and priests prepare before the service), there are vases on top of the cabinets and in some of the cabinets for you to use and cutting shears in the drawer. There are additional vases upstairs in the bell tower. You will need to trim and arrange the bouquets in the vases. You can either put the vases on the high altar or leave them on the counter in the sacristy to be put on the altar by the sacristan. You can also bring 2 matching vases from home if you have them, but they need to be fairly tall/large. Also don’t forget to collect them after the 11am service. There are gardening shears and scissors in the drawer in the sacristy.
-Questions? Please contact Jennifer Baker Howard, Parish Life & Office Manager via email ([email protected]) or cell (202.288.3628 text or call). Due to the ongoing pandemic, she is working remotely so email is the best way to reach her.
