Jewish Central Mass
The Jewish Federation of Central Mass, together with Worcester JCC Cares and ClarkU Hillel, are working together to combat food insecurity in our greater Worcester Community by donating and delivering food (perishable and non-perishable) to the Worcester Community Fridges located in downtown Worcester. Worcester Community Fridges was started with one goal in mind: to find a sustainable way to offset hunger in our city, while simultaneously helping curb food waste. Community fridges are a form of mutual aid rooted in the honor system of take what you need, and give what you can. With help from local farms, restaurants, and fellow community members, these fridges have been popping up in all major cities across the globe.
Currently, there are 2 refrigerators in Worcester (with a 3rd on the way, donated by Percy’s Appliances of Worcester) that are located in two outdoor locations insulated by a custom frame with a dry goods shelf set beside it for non-perishables. One refrigerator is located at 910 Main Street outside Fantastic Pizza near Clark University, and the other is located at 44 Portland Street. Please note that when you bring food, items can’t be homemade. They must be store bought, wrapped up, canned, or boxed for safety. Food can also be stored in the freezer. Non-refrigerated/freezer items can be placed on the shelves adjacent to the refrigerator.
Below you will find 6 months of dates where you can choose to help at either location. If a specific date is already filled, please choose another date that is still available. There is no limit to how many times you sign up. Helping even one time is a true, manageable mitzvah for most. And, if you are personally in need of food, please know that these refrigerators are there to help you as well.
For anyone who would like to participate, but is unable to do the legwork, you can make a donation via www.jewishcentralmass.org/tikunolam and our ClarkU Hillel students will do the legwork for you! Or, if you prefer, you can call up Fantastic Pizza at (508) 798-5577 and they will honor a 30% discount on sandwiches ordered and personally deliver it to the fridge at 910 Main Street on behalf of you.
For any questions, please contact Mindy Hall, Director of Outreach and Engagement, Jewish Federation of Central Mass at [email protected]. Please take a picture of you filling the fridge (if you don’t mind being on Facebook) and forward to Mindy so we can help publicize this amazing project on the Worcester Community Fridge Facebook page (private group) and on our Federation Community pages as well. Thank you!
