Six strangers, a lonely farmhouse, surrounded by brain-eating zombies – what could go wrong?
More than just a re-creation of the story, this play celebrates the history and influence of its source material. Through a series of multiple endings, the characters are all faced with different issues and challenges while desperately trying to survive the night. However, their contrasting personalities and agendas always seem to prevent the group from working together. Which leaves us all wondering: Could anyone survive a night of the living dead?
BARBRA – Female, early mid-20s. Traditional and put-together at first, but as the events unfold, digresses into a child-like state.
BEN – Male, African American, late-20s. A “leading man” type. Heroic. Outspoken. Protective of Barbra.
TOM – Young man. Handsome. Bright-eyed. Judy’s boyfriend.
JUDY – Young woman. Tom’s girlfriend. Girl next door.
HARRY – Male, late 30s. Curmudgeonly, working-class man. Weaselly and antagonistic. Helen’s husband and Karen’s father.
HELEN – Female, late 30s. Dry, world-weary homemaker. Unamused wife of Harry. Mother of Karen.
CHIEF MCCLELLAND – Male, late 30s. Small-town sheriff. Folksy and pragmatic.
VINCE – Chief McClelland’s young deputy. Local volunteer. A little idealistic. Obedient to the chief.
KAREN – Nine-year-old daughter of Harry and Helen. (To be played by an 18+ actor.)
Please prepare two (2) contrasting contemporary monologues, totalling no more than five (5) minutes, as well as a short character song. You will have to bring your own backing track via CD or MP3. A cold read may be requested.
