Room in the Inn
With colder weather comes a greater need to help the most fragile among us stay warm and sheltered. We are so blessed to have the space and the congregational support to serve as one of
the city’s most utilized Room in the Inn havens.
We will open our doors every Monday and Tuesday evenings beginning Monday, December 2, and concluding on Tuesday, March 31.
Clearly this takes a tremendous outpouring of congregational support. Please consider grabbing a friend (does not have to be a church member) and signing up for one or two of the following tasks.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
1) Overnight Hosts--This is the "heart" of our mission- the chance to make a friend and walk alongside them for a night! Arrive at the Church at 5:45 p.m. and check in with the nightly coordinator who will have everything set up and ready to roll. You will pick our guests up at the Urban Ministry Center in the church van. Dinner will be served at 6:30, followed by showers. Our guests settle in after showers and lights are out at 10:00. You are welcome to watch football, play cards and have some fellowship time with the guests if you are so inclined. Typically they are exhausted and just want to rest their weary heads. Our guests will stay in a room on cots and our hosts will be in a separate room. Guests depart at 6:30 a.m. and you are free to go.
2) Prepare and Serve Dinner—This is a favorite- especially for familes, and the spots fill up quickly. It is a wonderful opportunity to share a meal and fellowship with our guests. You will be asked to provide dinner for approximately 25 people (guests and volunteers) and have it ready to be served in the Frances Brown Dining Room at 6:30. You are welcome to use the FPC Kitchen for preparation. This is a two-person or family job in order to help with cost and labor. The food does not have to be home cooked…you are welcome to pick up a prepared meal from your favorite spot!
3) Provide 12 bag lunches—We send our guests off in the morning with a full belly and a bag lunch. We need volunteers to provide lunches each Monday and Tuesday morning. They will need to be dropped off in the FPC Kitchen the day before. Detailed Instructions are provided.
4) Provide Breakfast Food—This is easy but so important. We always provide breakfast for our guests before they head out for the day. Detailed Instructions are provided.
