#YouthCulture Spring Workshop Series: Science of Addiction - for Youth

Youths of middle and high school age are invited to a FREE workshop on the environment and culture around our youth.

The workshop, #YouthCulture: The Science of Addiction - for Youths, will be held from 6:45 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 29, 2021, live via Zoom.

This program is presented by The Poe Center

The Science of Addiction presentation will address the neurological ramifications when a psychoactive drug is introduced in the brain. At the end of the presentation, students will be able to categorize drugs hallucinogens, stimulants, and depressants and explain the characteristics of each, identify the neurotransmitters impacted by the introduction of the psychoactive drugs and describe the symptoms of drug use based on the neurotransmitters involved. In addition, students will understand the biological constructs of tolerance and withdrawal. Students will also be able to identify ways on how to apply risk reduction behaviors to protect themselves from substance use and risky situations. The Science of Addiction is an interactive presentation involving discussion and activities.

This program is for YOUTHS in high school.

This program is a part of our #YouthCulture Spring Workshop Series. These workshops explore how the developing adolescent brain shapes perceptions and behavior. All participants will receive a free packet of supportive materials and resources. Covered topics will include substance use, Internet safety, sexting, and healthy dating relationships.
