Isaiah 1:14 Your new moons and your appointed festivals my soul hates; they have become a burden to me, I am weary of bearing them.

Context: The people are going through the motions of faith - having festivals and rituals of faith, but injustice is rampant in their community and God finds their worship empty.

Isaiah 1:16-17 Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow.

Context: What was once pleasing to God (sacrifices, offerings, prayers) are no longer pleasing: they have become empty because worship is not accompanied by actions of justice.

Context: “In those days” is an indefinite future: this is a vision for the future where all will come to the God's house. All are welcome

Context: the people have been conquered by people who treat them horribly, God is bringing forth a vision for a wise and discerning leader who will bring peace.

Isaiah 11:1,3 A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear.

Context: Even from a tree that has been cut down; a stump, God can bring life and will bring new life from the line of Jesse. The one God is raising up will judge not by human ways.

Context: God brings salvation, God is worthy of praise. There is not need for fear, because God is faithful.

Context: Our victory and success are not measured by our culture’s standards: we are not put to shame, because of who God is, not by what we can earn or do.

Context: Abraham was only one person and is now has many descendants and is a part of the family of God. A rock does not come from nowhere – it comes from the quarry.

Context: God calls for the people to listen to what God proclaims: pay attention. There is a movement from "my nation" "the peoples" to "the nations" - God's promises are not just for a chosen few, but for all.

Context: There is evidence of what God has done: look and see. Though there are things that seem permanent, like the earth - it will eventually wear out. The promises of God, the salvation God provides will not wear out.

Context: God's invitation is to everyone: the word that God provides is nourishing like wine and milk. God's grace is not for sale, it is a free gift for all who hunger and thirst.

Context: We are invited to consider why we spend money on that which doesn't satisfy our hunger. God's word is what nourishes.

Context: God does not think and act in the same way that humans do. God's ways are above our ways.

Context: Here salvation and righteousness are visioned as garments that God clovers and clothes the speaker with. The speaker is dressed as radiantly as a groom and a bride are.
