Goods For Good

Birthday-In-A-Box

Through this Birthday-In-A-Box project, you can provide a family (families) living in partner shelters an easy "win"--- the tools for a true moment of joy and celebration on kids' birthdays.

Guidelines for Volunteers:

  • Each date represents the birthday of a young person in a partner shelter or the date of a communal shelter birthday celebration.
  • Signing up means you pledge to be responsible for creating a Birthday-In-A-Box/Bag Celebrations for that young person and their family, or the communal group (depending on the slot).
  • Due to the nature of those that reside in the shelters and their varying traumatic experiences, PLEASE DO NOT ENTER THE SHELTER OR GO TO THE SHELTER WITH CHILDREN. As lovely and caring as birthday notes are, PLEASE ALSO DO NOT INCLUDE A CARD OR MONETARY GIFT. Delivering these wonderful treats in a distantly respectful and anonymous way is appreciated and necessary.

FOR INDIVIDUAL CHILDREN'S BIRTHDAYS (& THEIR FAMILIES) (Turning Point Shelter, My Sister's Place & DASH):

  1. Some basic information is provided on the sign-up (address, gender, age to-be, parent and number of siblings). You will receive more detailed information (names, ages of siblings, bday child's hobbies/likes, etc.) approximately 3 weeks in advance of your signed up for date.
  2. Contents of an Individual Birthday-In-A-Box should include:
  • Birthday treat (cake or cupcakes to serve the total number in the family).  Please NO NUTS or NUT PRODUCTS!
  • 1-2 age-and-culturally-appropriate wrapped birthday presents for birthday child (moderate, not $$)
  • Age-and-culturally-appropriate party decor/favors (i.e. party hats, blowers, few streamers, balloons to blow up, fun dessert plates/napkins).
  • Small, age-and-culturally-appropriate goody bags for each sibling (i.e a few low cost items like mini bubbles, mini play doh, markers, rubber bouncy balls, lollypop, card game). Please be mindful of not getting items that could be dangerous for kids at varying ages (i.e. choking hazards).
  • Small goody bag for mother (i.e. a few low cost items e.g. lotion, lip gloss, chocolate, frame).
