Autumn and Apples - National Public Lands Day at Hopewell Furnace NHS

Hopewell Furnace will observe the 26th annual National Public Lands Day on September 28, 2019.

We need your help with several projects that will conserve and protect your beautiful site.

From 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on September 28, 2019 we will have the following projects to get involved with:

  • Tree planting & Invasive plant removal
  • Removing old fencing and replacing with new
  • Washing the Visitor Center fence and Park waysides

All tools will be provided.  Comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes are required.

Suitability: Adults, Kids, Teens, Seniors, Groups, Family

Difficulty: Average

Please note:

  • For tree planting/invasive plant removal, children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.  Long sleeves and pants are recommended since the plants being removed are prickly and also to prevent ticks

 

Interested participants should sign up no later than September 24, 2019

Tree planting and Invasive plant removal (12)

Participants must be able to walk up to 1 mile on un-even terrain, bend/kneel to dig holes, carry and plant potted seedlings, carry and use hand tools, cut thorny plants and work in general outdoor conditions (heat, insects, poison ivy, etc.)

Split rail fence removal and replacement (6)

Participants will replace fence posts and rails with new wood as well as install barn signage along the fence.

Washing the Visitor Center fence around the Ironmasters Mansion (4)

Participants will use soapy water and brushes to clean the fence around the Big House.
