Audition Dates – please sign up for an audition appointment on one of these days:

Wednesday, September 8, 5:00 – 9:00 pm

Thursday, September 9, 4:00 – 9:00 pm

LOCATION: Leggett Room, Second Floor, University Student Center

Auditions are open to the entire GWU community regardless of major or experience, as well as to those who are auditioning for class credit but not to be in the production.

 

Callbacks will be Friday, September 10, 4:00 – 9:00 pm

Rehearsals for Smart People will be held evenings and weekends beginning Monday, November 1, 2021.
Performances will be Thursday, December 9, through Sunday, December 12, 2021.

What to prepare for the audition:

EITHER a contemporary monologue of your choice up to 2 minutes in length.  

OR a monologue from among the selections from Smart People found here 

 

  • BRIAN – p. 92-93 from “My point.” To “please don’t fuck my daughter” (Cutting Jackson’s line in between the two monologues)

  • GINNY – monologue p. 42

  • JACKSON – p. 50 from “So here’s what I do.” To “I don’t have time for that.” (Cutting Valerie’s line in between the two monologues)

  • VALERIE – monologue p. 54  

 

About the play:

Set in Cambridge, Massachusetts between 2007 and the 2009 inauguration of President Barrack Obama, Smart People is a dramatic comedy which introduces us to four of Harvard University’s brightest: a surgeon, an actress, a psychologist, and a neuropsychologist. All four are fighting to be successful and seen while navigating minefields of racism, sexism and love.

 

Characters

Valerie Johnston – (early-to-mid 20s) African American female who recently graduated from the A.R.T. Institute at Harvard University trying to make her way as a professional actor. 

Jackson Moore – (late 20s) African American male, currently in his surgical residency with Harvard medical school.

Brian White – (mid-30s to early 40s) White male, tenured professor at Harvard. Neuropsychiatrist researching racism and brain patterns. 

Ginny Yang – (mid-30s to early 40s) Chinese-Japanese-American female. Tenured professor of psychology at Harvard, MacArthur “Genius” Fellow researching anxiety and depression among Asian American women.
