PTSA International Culture Committee
The Dows Lane and Main Street School families will have an amazing opportunity to participate in the International Culture Night: A Celebration of Global Togetherness, which will be held at Dows Lane on Friday, March 1st, 2019, from 5 to 8 p.m.
This is a friendly PTSA event. Children in the elementary grades will get an opportunity to expand their knowledge about foreign cultures, and thus help them develop a sense of global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity. As the title indicates, it is about celebrating all nations and our belonging to one planet.
We are currently looking for enthusiastic volunteers among our families to become Country Coordinators who will create country-specific stations, which will feature various cultural highlights of the selected country - architectural and natural beauty, games, music, art work, popular sports, fun facts etc. We encourage several families to run one station so that they can brainstorm together on how to best represent the country and help each other successfully manage the table. Families do not have to be from the specific country, just a special interest is welcome. Now is a great time to begin thinking about this event as many of you will be heading to different parts of the world for the holidays. Let’s bring back interesting authentic objects to display at the event!
Each student will "travel around the world" with a special passport and will obtain a stamp after learning interesting facts at each country station.
INTERNATIONAL FOOD COURT
In addition, with the help of the community, we would like to create an International Food Court showcasing the cuisine of as many countries as possible. If you would like to make something traditional to share, or donate food made elsewhere, we would be grateful for your contribution. Wow your friends with your delicious authentic meals. PLEASE NOTE A NEW SIGN UP LINK for everyone who would like to donate food:
In the main Dows Lane auditorium, we are planning to hold cultural performances (individual or groups). The children and their families will be able to show their international talents through music and dance performances, sports such as Korean Taekwondo, Japanese Karate or Chinese Tai Chi, local rituals, fashion shows with traditional dress etc. The performances should be under 5 minutes long.
Sign up for "Country Coordinators" ended on December 20, 2018. Food donations are still open.
It may seem far away, but we need many hands to make this night a success!
Thank you very much for your help! We cannot wait to celebrate with everyone!
