Simchat Torah Volunteers

Tapas & Torah: A Simchat Torah Culinary Tour

2019 Volunteer Information

Each person at Temple Beth-El has a unique way to connect with others. During TBE events we have identified the most important areas where the Temple Beth-El community can welcome warmly, support efficiently and keep safe those that will be coming through our doors. This time of year we have guests who may enter for the first time, for the first time in a long time or may be regular Temple goers. As part of the TBE Volunteer Team, you will be responsible for intentionally creating an inviting, safe and welcoming atmosphere to each person you come in contact with. And in order to do that, we have a few requirements to be a part of this incredible team:

Minimum Requirements for EVERY Volunteer:

  • Be willing to go through our “Active Shooter” & “Recognizing and Dealing with Suspicious People” Trainings  (CLICK HERE to access training. Training assessment must be completed before you are able to serve.)

  • Be available for the full length of your shift from check-in time to last time listed to serve

  • You must wear a lanyard at all times while serving

  • Follow all necessary actions as described and as instructed by Team Leaders & Staff

  • Friendly and speak-first-to-guests personality

If you are able to commit to these requirements, we would welcome you to join our amazing Volunteer Team!

Greeter Team

(Attendees or members are eligible to serve)

You are the first impression those attending will have of Temple Beth-El. This team welcomes by SPEAKING FIRST to those attending services/events with warm, inviting, friendly smiles from the street to the seats! You should strive to be approachable but not too chatty to keep the other guests welcomed as they enter. If serving outside, you will direct people to enter through our one main entrance (head towards main building entrance). Please check-in and be in position according to the times specified for your role.

Community Guard

(Only members are eligible to serve in this role)

This team’s primary responsibility is to keep the congregation safe during services by being vigilant for any large bags, suspicious behavior and anyone or anything out of place. These individuals will be intentionally assigned stations in the Sanctuary they will need to oversee during services. In addition to communicating through earpieces and hand signals with the Community Guard Leader and armed guard present, they will be responsible for assisting attendees if needed to their seats, seating latecomers, assisting those with special needs (hearing impaired, visually impaired, etc.) and also be responsible for filling in open seats from the front center to the outside and back areas as quickly as possible. At a certain point during service you will also be required to do a headcount of your assigned section and report it to the Community Guard Leader.  Community Guards will be stationed in certain areas in the Sanctuary and must remain “active” during the entire service. Each Community Guard will have a reserved seat on an outside aisle in their assigned section and they must remain “active” during the entire service, being vigilant and ready to assist anyone walking in late or needing help during services.

Ticketing Team

(Attendees or members are eligible to serve)

These individuals are responsible for ensuring the safety of everyone inside all services & events during the the event by ensuring each person entering the building has a ticket. Tickets are complimentary but required for EACH service. Using an iPad or their personal smartphone, this team will scan each person’s ticket as they enter or direct those who have not registered or forgot their tickets to the Will Call/Onsite Registration locations. While always remaining friendly in demeanor, these individuals should be comfortable with operating technology quickly, potentially troubleshooting “off the cuff” and confident in the process under what can be at times a high-pressure situation. At least one ticketer should remain in place at least 1 hour into the service to ensure those entering late are accounted for or directed to the Will Call/Onsite Registration location. Ticketers will not need to return to their positions after service has been released.

Onsite Registration Team

(Attendees or members are eligible to serve)

Onsite Registration Team: This team will be responsible for registering anyone who did not pre-register for the event, or did pre-register but did not bring their ticket with them to the service. These individuals must be comfortable typing and operating technology (either an iPad, laptop or desk computer), be friendly in demeanor as the person waits to check in all the while helping the guest understand we are thankful to have them attending. In the event that technology is slow or not working for some reason, there will be a paper registration form that will need to be completed per person for that service with pertinent information. Once the Registration Team member ensures we have all the required information, direct them into service. This area will remain open throughout the entire service and we will attempt to have an avenue for Livestreaming services once they begin.
