Non Family Event Volunteers
Misericordia washes, fluffs, and folds a staggering 3,500 pounds of laundry a day! We need your help with the folding. . .it’s just like home! If you are at least 12 years of age or older and able to help in our laundry, please sign up directly on this page. To do so, simply check the "sign up" box next to the event(s) you can help with and then be sure to click on the "submit and sign up" tab at the bottom of the page. You will then advance to the next screen to complete your sign up.
NOTE that these dates do NOT involve direct interaction with our residents. You will be working alongside our staff and other volunteers.
At Misericordia we see to it that our residents are well dressed and well groomed before they head out the door each day and we ask that all volunteers respect the same dress code that our residents do. Comfortable and casual, yet presentable is the name of the game. Personal attire must be clean, pressed and in good taste. Jeans, sweatshirts and T-shirts are all acceptable as long as they are not ripped or torn and have no questionable sayings on them. Pants must fit properly (meaning no droopy drawers). Women’s Capri pants must be mid-calf length or longer. Shirts must have some type of sleeve and be long enough to cover the top of your pants, even when you bend and stretch. Shorts, tank tops, sleeveless shirts, bare midriff tops, low cut necklines and mini skirts are not allowed. Volunteers must also wear closed toed shoes. Gym shoes are great. No flip flops or opened toed sandals. Extremes in dress, hairstyles, and make-up should be avoided. Exposed body piercing should be limited to the ears.
COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS (if applicable)
Volunteers that are required to do service hours for school credit, the court system or the like, are held 100% responsible for keeping a log of their own volunteer visits/participation AND for getting a staff signature each visit to validate their hours. If the school/organization requiring the hours of you provides you with a paper to be signed, it is very important that you bring it along with you each and every time you visit and you need to request a signature on each day. If the school/organization requiring the hours of you does not supply you with a time sheet/ log sheet then please be sure to follow the following instructions. We suggest that you create a time sheet that you will bring with you every visit. This can be on a regular sheet of white paper, nothing fancy or formal is necessary. The time sheet should include your name, the date you visited, the area in which you volunteered, the time you started, the time you ended and most importantly a signature from a staff person that you worked with on that day. Note: A signature from a staff person MUST be obtained each visit in order for the Volunteer Coordinators to write a letter confirming your participation on Misericordia letterhead. NOTE: THERE ARE NO MISERICORDIA RESIDENTS IN OUR LAUNDRY ON WEEKENDS OR HOLIDAYS.
CANCELATIONS: If for any reason you are unable to make your scheduled commitment, we ask that you go back into your signup genius account and delete your entry for the particular day. We have such a need in our laundry, and only have space for a set number of volunteers per shift, so any no shows impact our ability to complete the work in a timely manner. Updating your record essentially opens the spot for another volunteer.
DIRECTIONS to help you find the correct building on our 31 acre campus
The building is called the McAuley Residence. Its actual address is 2060 W. Granville in Chicago, however due to certain gates being closed/locked on weekends it is important for you to enter our campus as directed below:
Set your GPS/Map Quest to 1850 W. Thome, Chicago. As you turn onto Thome, from Ridge Avenue, you will notice a reception area on your right, about half way down the block. Continue past that entrance to the end of the block where you must go left. Go left and then make a right onto the driveway between the Moore Aquatic Center and the Shannon Apt. building. The red brick and cream colored building directly facing you across campus is the McAuley Residence.
When you arrive at the McAuley Residence, be prepared to show a photo ID. Tell the receptionist that you are there to volunteer in the laundry facility and he/she will direct you from there. You can reach McAuley reception at (773) 273-4744, or the laundry area at (773) 273-4138, should you need to reach them for any reason.
Thank you in advance for your help.
