ROFUM’s volunteers will provide and deliver much needed fresh produce to Redford Brightmoor Initiative’s Free Store Shoppers the second Friday/Saturday of every month.
Due to COVID-19, we are running things a bit differently until our church opens up, so below are detailed instructions. Feel free to contact Jennie (248 763-4728 / [email protected]) or Astrid (248 635-6357 / [email protected]) with questions.
We are in need of 4 people to each buy enough produce to make 13 plastic bags of assorted produce (a total of 52 bags) on the second Friday of every month, and 1 person to deliver the produce on the following day, Saturday.
Please get a variety of produce that do not need to be refrigerated. You will be reimbursed for your expenses - just email a picture of your receipt with a note to Jennifer Tripoli ([email protected]) and she will mail you a check from the Missions fund. Put in the Email Subject Line "Mission Reimbursement for RBI Produce"
Sometime on Friday, go buy the produce. We have found Aldi to have excellent prices, but go anywhere you like! Try to find items that are economical, don't require refrigeration for a night, and things that are somewhat small and could easily be tossed in a bag together. (ie - probably no melons or large heads of broccoli).
Then put together the bags and tie the handles closed. Typically a bag would look something like this:
1 bag baby carrots
1-2 cucumber or zucchini or green pepper or a package of green beans
For your 13 bags, you will be looking to spend about $55-$65. We have been spending about $5 per bag just to give you a frame of reference, but we are not restricted to a dollar amount. If you go over or under that it is not important, as long as you have a good variety similar to the above list. You have to estimate how many potatoes or apples, etc are in the bags to see how many to buy. (We found there were anywhere between 25 & 35 potatoes in a 10 lb bag depending on the size of the potatoes).
We will reach out to you the week of the event to give you details regarding delivery location and times.
