As part of a larger Anti-Bullying Campaign throughout Montogmery County, the team which brought you last year's highly acclaimed #BEHERETOMORROW
Every 7 minutes a child is bullied, but only four in 100 adults will intervene. Only 11 percent of kids will help out peer being bullied. That means an astounding 85 percent of bullying goes unstopped. According to the National Education Association, an estimated 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear or intimidation by other students. Suicide continues to be a leading cause of death among children under 14. 71% of students report incident of bullying as a problem in their school. 9 out of 10 LGBTQ+ youth report being verbally harassed at school. Meanwhile, nearly half report physical harassment and a quarter report being assaulted. Of those who reported the harassment, nearly one-third said the school staff did nothing to stop it. Fifty percent of teens report being cyberbullied yet only ten percent report it to their parents. The statistics are mindblowing. So how do you help your child?
Keith Deltano uses serious comedy to engage students, teachers, and parents during his school assemblies, teacher workshops, and parent outreach events. His experience as an award winning teacher and parent coach have turned him into one of the nation’s most requested anti bullying speakers. Keith addresses cyberbullying, physical bullying, racism, exclusion, verbal bullying, gossip, and the mean girl phenomenon. He also addresses heavier topics like cutting, teen suicide, teen depression, and the importance of seeking help for self-harming behaviors. The program goes beyond the bully/victim/bystander labels to get at the underlying causes of bullying.
His unusual approach of addressing the mindset of the victim as well as the bully, will inspire those that have been bullied and force the bullies to take a harsh look at why they do what they do. His personal storyof how he overcame the bullying as a result of having severe learning disabilities, and struggled academically, behaviorally, and socially throughout school will leave you inspired. He teaches victims how to respond to bullying and bystanders exactly what they need to do to take a stand.
This FREE program will be geared towards parents, educators, social workers, clinicians, therapists, clergy, high school teens, neighbors, family members and anyone who works, lives or cares for children. Refreshments and resource materials will be provided.
